Gas prices are always a source of frustration for car owners, especially with prices sometimes hovering near $4 a gallon. Learning a few simple tips for saving on gas mileage can not only help you save at the fuel pump, but also help keep your car performing its best.

Below are a few tips to help you get better gas mileage:

1. Routine Maintenance: It is always important to keep your vehicle well maintained. When your car is properly cared for, it will help it perform better and be more efficient, which as a result can help you achieve better gas mileage.

Check Tire Pressure: Keeping your tires properly inflated not only is safer and will help you get a longer lifetime out of your tires, but can also help you save fuel as well. When tires are not properly inflated, it is more difficult for the wheels to rotate, which causes your engine to need more energy and fuel.

Wheel Alignment: Keep all wheels in proper alignment. Improper alignment not only causes faster tire wear but also puts an extra load on the engine.

Drive Consistently: Speeding on the roads only to slam the brakes at a red light or stop sign not only can be dangerous, but it can also cause greater fuel consumption. Try to drive at a consistent speed, and gradually coming to a stop or pressing on the accelerator. Avoid stop and go driving.

Engine Idling: Avoid long engine idling. If you have to wait for a long period of time, it is better to turn off the engine and start again later.

Braking: Don’t rest your foot on the clutch or brake pedal. This causes needless wear, overheating and poor fuel economy.

Gear Position: Avoid engine lag or over-revving. Use a gear position suitable for the type of road you’re traveling. Accelerate slowly and smoothly. Avoid jackrabbit starts. Get into a higher gear as quickly as possible.

Don’t Overload Your Vehicle: The more weight in your car, the more fuel the car needs. Be sure when transporting heavy items in your car that you remove those items from the car when not needed. If packing for long trips keep in mind that car carriers can greatly reduce your gas mileage on the highway.

Heating and Cooling Costs: Running the air conditioning or heating in your car can also cause your car to need more gas. Consider driving with the windows down when the weather is nice – though when driving on the highway it may not make a difference, since if the windows are rolled down it can cause extra wind resistance to the car.

There are many ways you can help improve the gas mileage of you car. By scheduling regular maintenance of your vehicle and practicing good driving habits, you might just be surprised at what a difference it can make!

How to Take Care of Your Tires

Learn how to care for your tires properly to ensure they last a long time, as well as help you stay safe on the road!

Learning how to properly care and maintain your tires will not only help your tires last longer, but it will also help you increase your gas mileage and help your vehicle be safer on the road.

Here are some tips to make sure you keep your tires well cared for:

Check Your Tire Pressure Regularly: Did you know a tire may not appear flat but be below its recommended tire pressure? When tires are not properly inflated it can cause stress to the tire, uneven wear, and can make it difficult to maintain control of your car while steering. Do not rely on your car’s built in tire pressure warning system to tell you when your tires need to be filled with air – they usually need air much sooner than that!

Alignment: Pennsylvania is well known for road contruction, potholes, and other road hazards – all of which can easily knock a car out of alignment.

Rotation: It is recommended for most tires that they be rotated every 5,000 miles to ensure even wearing, though some tires may require more or less depending on the manufacturer’s specifications.

Check Tread Periodically: Uneven wearing of tires can cause your tire tread to not be able to grip onto the road, especially when there are adverse conditions, such as snow or rain. When tread is less than 1/16 of an inch, tires must be replaced.

If you have any other questions about caring for and checking your tires, feel free to ask us anytime – we are always more than happy to help!
